Lady Mustangs ease past South Jones

The Laurel Lady Golden Tornadoes and West Jones Lady Mustangs are headed to the South State 4A Tournament.
The Lady Tornadoes defeated Petal 53-49 and West Jones downed South Jones 49-40 Monday night in the opening round of the Region 5-4A Tournament at West Jones.
In the only boys game of the evening, Wayne County drilled South Jones, 82-47.
All three winners advance to the semifinals on Thursday and are assured of competing in next week’s opening round of the South State 4A Tournament.
In tonight’s games, the host West Jones boys meet Petal 5 and the Northeast Jones boys face Quitman at 8. In the only girls’ game of the evening, Northeast Jones meets Quitman at 6:30.
Lady Mustangs 49, Lady Braves 40
The Lady Mustangs won their 20th game of the season with their first round win over their Jones County rivals from Ellisville.
South Jones led 6-5 after the first period before West Jones rallied to lead 20-16 at halftime. The Lady Mustangs took their first lead at 10-8 early in the second period when Murphy Matthews hit a layup. They extended that lead to 16-10, their biggest lead of the opening half.
West Jones built up a 12-point lead in the third period before settling for a 36-26 lead after three periods.
Freshman Anna Sumrall led West Jones, 20-9,with 16 points, while Matthews, another freshman, chipped in with 11 points.
The Lady Mustangs were 6-of-27 from the floor in the first half (22 percent) and 12-of-21 (near 60 percent) in the second half.
Dominique Evans led the Lady Braves, 8-17, with 14 points while Chiquita Ducksworth added 11 points.
