2006 Football Pics | Top Stories Mustangs down Braves Reprinted with special permission from the Laurel Leader Call West Jones posts 26-3 Region 5-4A victory over South Jones By Shawn Wansley, sports@laurelleadercall.com The Mustangs used defense and special teams to set up favorable field position and knocked off South Jones 26-3 here Friday night at Braves Stadium. The victory improves West Jones to 6-2 overall, 3-1 in Region 5-4A. South Jones drops to 0-8 and 0-5. For the game, South Jones had 115 yards net, compared to 150 for the Mustangs. West Jones ended up with 12 first downs, compared to five for the Braves. The Mustangs had eight fumbles, but lost just one. After a scoreless first quarter, West Jones got on the board on its first possession of the second quarter. After a short punt, the Mustangs were at the South Jones 41-yard line. Four plays later, Jerrell Knight scored on a 7-yard run. Adam Herrington’s extra point gave the Mustangs a 7-0 lead with 8:49 left in the first half. On the ensuing possession, Mustang linebacker Marcus Pierce intercepted a pass and returned it 24 yards for an apparent touchdown. However, West Jones was called for an illegal block on the return and took over at the South 16. After an illegal participation penalty vs. the Braves moved the ball to the 8-yard line, quarterback Chase Headrick found Tyler Gardner on a slant pass to the right for the touchdown. The extra point was blocked by Brandon Bester, but the Mustangs led 13-0 with 7:41 left in the first half. Late in the half, the Mustangs took over on the South Jones 46. Ten plays later, Headrick rolled to his right and hit Marcus Pierce for a 10-yard scoring strike. Bester blocked the extra point again and West Jones led 19-0 with 25.9 seconds left in the first half. The two teams slugged out for most of the third quarter until the Braves put a drive together. Starting a drive at their own 41, South Jones got the ball to running back Henry McGilberry. McGilberry raced 48 yards all the way to the Mustang 11. On second down from the 10, the Braves ran a reverse pass with their wideouts, but Drew Crosby’s throw just missed Karl Ivy in the end zone. On fourth down, Wilson Bounds booted a 27-yard field goal to trim the lead to 19-3 with 1:04 left in the third quarter. Knight returned Bounds’ kickoff from his own 11 to the Braves’ 46. Seven plays later on a fourth and seven, the Mustangs ran a reverse pass with their wideouts. This time, Kraig Simpson hit Gardner from 19 yards out for the touchdown. Herrington’s conversion was good and West Jones was up 26-3 with 9:22 remaining.
