West Jones answers critics, beats Collins

Jerrell Knight scored two touchdowns as West Jones upended Collins 31-7 Friday night at Mustang Stadium. West Jones improves to 5-2, while Collins drops to 5-2. The Mustangs scored four touchdowns in the first half. Chase Headrick scored on a 1-yard run with 8:10 to play in the first quarter, and Knight, who rushed 7 times for 44 yards, scored on a 5-yard run with 3:12 to play in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Knight caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Headrick and just before halftime, Corey Cooley scored on a 52-yard interception return as the Mustangs took a 28-0 halftime lead. In the second half, Adam Herrington kicked a 29-yard field goal to add to his four extra-point conversions for West Jones. Collins drove down the field in the third quarter with Jonathan Booth scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run with Kendrick Clark kicking the extra point. Headrick passed for 165 yards with eight completions out of 15 attempts. Tyler Gardner caught six of those passes for 124 yards. West Jones ran up 253 total yards while holding the Tigers to 164, 111 on the ground. West overcame seven fumbles (lost one) and was penalized four times for 28 yards. Collins was flagged 11 times for 62 yards. The Mustangs return to Region 5-4A play next week at South Jones, while Collins returns to Region 8-3A play, hosting Purvis.
