It was not a thing of beauty, but the Wayne County War Eagles will take it.

The War Eagles, playing without suspended star quarterback Drexler Johnson, whipped West Jones 34-14 Friday night before over 8,000 fans at Mustang Stadium.

The victory improves Wayne County to 6-0 overall, 2-0 in Region 5-4A. The loss drops West Jones to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the region.

Officials said Johnson was suspended from school for a week because of disciplinary reasons. But it did not make too much difference as backup quarterbacks Calvin McDougle and Steve Chambers effectively led the War Eagle offense.

Wayne County ended the game with 314 yards of total offense, compared to 107 yards for the Mustangs.

But penalty yardage was the big winner on the night. Wayne County was penalized 16 times for 170 yards, while the Mustangs were penalized 13 times for 125 yards.

War Eagle running back Tracy Lampley rushed 20 times for 107 yards, while McDougle had 16 rushes for 77 yards.

Jerrell Knight rushed seven times for 59 yards for West Jones.

After a scoreless first quarter, the War Eagles got on the board first. Wayne County went 69 yards in 13 plays with Chambers scored on a 2-yard option carry to his right. Trey McRae kicked the extra point and the War Eagles were up 7-0 with 10:29 left in the first half.

On Wayne County’s next possession they moved 46 yards in six plays. This time, Lampley took a handoff on fourth-and-2, broke through the defense and raced 27 yards for a score. McRae’s kick made it 14-0 with 6:51 left in the first half.

The War Eagles closed the first half scoring, driving 88 yards in 10 plays. McDougle connected with Reggie Parker from four yards for the score. The conversion attempt failed, but Wayne County led 20-0 with 1:14 remaining in the second quarter.

Wayne County increased their lead in the third quarter. They marched 58 yards in eight plays with McDougle doing the honors from four yards out. He got hit around the three, but kept plugging his way into the end zone. The conversion attempt failed, but Wayne County led 26-0 with 4:17 left in the third quarter.

The Mustangs got on the board via their special teams.

Knight took a punt at his own 40-yard line and proceeded to return it 60 yards for a score. Adam Herrington’s conversion made it 26-7 with 1:54 left in the third quarter.

West Jones held Wayne County on the next possession and took over on their own 15 following a punt. They moved out to their own 44 in just three plays. But on the next, the Mustangs fumbled and Wayne County’s Keith Smith scooped it up and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown.

The War Eagles were called for a personal foul after the score and were penalized back to the 18, where they tried for the two-point conversion. McDougle found Colby Cooley in the end zone for the successful conversion and it was 34-7 with 10:14 left in the game.

Midway through the final quarter, West’s Regrick Young recovered a War Eagle fumble at the Wayne County 45. Three plays later, quarterback Chase Headrick scored on a 10-yard run. Herrington added the extra point to close the scoring at the 7:11 mark.

Wayne County hosts South Jones next week, while West Jones entertains Collins.
