Marcus Pierce shines again for Mustangs

QUITMAN — West Jones’ Marcus Pierce scored three touchdowns three different ways as the Mustangs trounced the Panthers 26-8 here Friday night. Pierce’s first touchdown came with 2:42 left in the first quarter as he scored on a 45-yard fumble recovery. Just a few minutes into the second quarter, Pierce scored on a 50-yard interception return. Both extra point attempts were not converted and West had a 12-0 advantage. About three minutes later, Pierce recovered another fumble. Then from scrimmage, he ran over a Quitman player to score again on a 17-yard run. This time Adam Herrington kicked the extra point, as the Mustangs went up 19-0 at halftime. The third quarter was quiet, but in the fourth quarter West Jones quarterback Chase Headrick scored o a 5-yard run with 10:30 left to play. Herrington’s kick put the score at 26-0. With 24 seconds left to play, Quitman’s Dejaun Ealie scored on a 6-yard run and Jamie Keenan hit Corey Devun for the two-point conversion. Quitman outgained the Mustangs 193 total yards to 174, but was hurt by Tyler Gardner’s punting. He hit a 64-yarder and a 66-yarder for a 49.8 yard average, while Quitman punted six times for a 29-yard average. The Mustangs also had three interceptions and three fumble recoveries, as Jerrell Knight picked off two passes. West Jones, 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Region 5-4A, hosts Wayne County next week. Quitman, 1-4 and 0-2, visits South Jones.
